About Jill Laughlin, PMHNP

Education – Dr. Jill Laughlin is a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner who earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in May of 2020. This degree is the culmination of her dedication to the nursing profession that began with a Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University in 1987 and a Masters from the University of Texas Medical Branch in 2007 that qualified her as a pediatric nurse practitioner and a primary care child and adolescent mental health specialist.

Professional Experience – Jill began her nursing practice as an RN in newborn care, the neonatal ICU and pediatrics. With time off to raise her three children Jill has combined her clinical work with an active teaching career. She has been a part time professor at the University of St. Thomas and the University of Connecticut in their baccalaureate nursing programs, where she has lectured on neurobiology, psychopharmacology, therapeutic interviewing skills, and assessment/treatment for various psychiatric illnesses. Dealing with the exigencies of the pandemic, she has helped develop online lectures for students transitioning to a fully virtual classroom setting.

Jill has been a speaker at the Texas Nurse Association and Pediatrics in the Gulf conferences. She has recently joined the task force of the Nonverbal Learning Disorder Foundation in New York.

Primary Focus – Jill’s expertise and passion lies in treating children and adolescents with ADHD, anxiety, depression, autism and behavioral issues. But she also welcomes the opportunity to apply her experience to managing the psychiatric illnesses of all ages and life stages. Jill believes strongly in an integrated holistic approach to care, which includes exercise, nutrition and sleep hygiene. This approach leads her to be more conservative in prescribing controlled substances.
